2018 Department of Wisconsin Oratorical Results
The American Legion State Oratorical Contest was held Saturday, February 10th in Ripon. Those in attendance witnessed some phenomenal orations. Rachel Hubbard from Neenah represented Sixth District. Anyone who attended the Sixth District Awards banquet had a chance to hear Rachel deliver her prepared oration. Although she represented Sixth District very well, she was not able to advance past the Regional round of Competition. Heartbreaking as it was, even her dad knew it was a very close race and he could not fault the judges. Hats off to Rachel for her efforts!
The winner was Joshua Anumolu, Glendale Post 331, Fifth District.
Second place went to Timothy Davis, Watertown Post 189, Second District.
Third was taken by Zoe Plzak, Appleton Post 38, Ninth District.
Sixth District Oratorical
Rachel Hubbard earned the right to represent Sixth District by winning the Sixth District Contest held in Stockbridge on January28th. Only two Counties were represented at the District Contest, Alexander Douglas, a freshman from Princeton, Green Lake County and Rachel Hubbard, a junior from Neenah, Winnebago County. I hope to see both of them again next year, Alexander for several years to come.
Thanks to all who helped with this year’s District Contest:
Wayne Steffen, District Vice-Commander East, Stockbridge Schools, Our judges, Sgt-at-Arms, escorts, monitor, tabulators, timekeepers, our contestants,
Thanks to Winnebago and Green Lake Counties and the Posts who sponsored contestants.
As I look back, see this not as the culmination of our 2018 Oratorical Program, but rather an opportunity to get excited for what’s ahead. Next year we expect to hold District Competition in either Green Lake or Marquette County. We believe it is important to move our events throughout the District to remain visible to the entire District. We already have at least 2 county competitors I expect will return for 2019. If we start encouraging newcomers to the program now, we can improve our chances of having multiple contestants in January. Let’s have a District Competition with 6 contestants and County contests with 3 or more competitors.

Alexander Douglas attended the Christmas Dinner at the Princeton American Legion on Saturday night and is pictured presenting his prepared speech for the upcoming American Legion oratorical contest to the dinner guests. Alexander is a student at Green Lake School and is sponsored by the Green Lake American Legion, he will be representing all of the Green Lake County Posts in the district competition later this month.
